The fundamental Triz
When we had our seminars in september, we capitalized on
the following things in TRIZ:
- Start from the function
- Intensify to find the conflict
- Always try to get to the Ideal System
- Separate the contradiction in time
- Separate the contradiction in space
Trimming
An object can be taken away if:
- The function of the object doesnĄt longer exist
- its function on an other object can be performed of the
other object alone
- the function of the object is performed by other
objects or its surroundings.

Put something between the objects
Put something on top of one of the objects

Kalevi Rantanen and the formula of the two pluses
Our finnish colleague Kalevi Rantanen of TRIS OY is
writing a book on
something that is called the formula of two pluses. With
his permission we
are writing a draft of his work.
What is an alternative system?
If the tire of a car is made steady and durable, grip
becomes worse. If grip
is improved then the tire wears away fast. The problem
can easily be illustrated
by the scheme of pluses and minuses:
Soft tire: + Good Grip - Short service life
Hard tire: - Bad grip + Long service life
Soft tire, which we should improve, is initial system.
Let us mark it with "+" the
most important positive reature of initial system, and by
"-" its worst drawback.
An alternative system is a system in which plus and minus
have changed places
compared with initial system. In the scheme the pluses
and the minuses must be
one below the other, if we want to speak about an
alternative system. The hard tire,
which has got a bad grip, but is durable is the
alternative system of a soft tire.
For every engineering system we can always find an
alternative system. If we can't
find any real, existing system, we can imagine
non-existing system.
A good solution is the combination of the initial and the
alternative system.
The pluses are left, and the minuses disappear. We can
predict, that some
day appears new tires which are in some sense soft and
hard.
For example: soft material consisting of hard particles
(micro-studs).

Addition to ASI:s Tools of TRIZ
On ASI American Supplier Institutes homepage, they are
writing about the
major tools of TRIZ and that they are:

procedures for resolving system conflicts and averting
trade-offs.
Standard Approaches to Inventive Problems - a set
of typical techniques
for solving broad classes of engineering problems based
on an established
fact that various problems from different fields of
technology can be solved
by similar generic approaches.
Knowledge Base of Engineering Application of
Physical, Chemical, and
Geometric Effects - based on the study of 1.5 million
patents, 400,000 of
which are considered the world's most inventive.
TIPS Innovation would like to add a few more important
tools:
Su-Field Analysis - A tool for expressing function
statements in terms of
one object on another object. The objects are called
Substances and the
action a Field.
Technological evolution - Altschuller, by studying
2,5 million
patents, was able to determine eight patterns of how
technological systems
develop over time. Based upon the patterns of how people
think rather than
what people think, technological evolution is like a
roadmap into the future.
Rather than predicting future technologies, one can
systematically invent
future technologies.
Trimming - It is possible to trim the element of
the
system if the object does not exist, the function of the
object is performed
by the object itself or if the function is performed by
the remaining elements.
